The world’s first barge-to-ship methanol bunkering operation at the Port of Rotterdam

Methanex launched the world’s first barge-to-ship methanol bunkering operation at the Port of Rotterdam on Monday. We as Dynamic Port Agencies were proud to be of assistance during the coordination of this bunkering operation.

mv Takaroa Sun participated in the event as the inaugural methanol-operated vessel to be bunkered by a commercial barge, similar to how most ocean-going ships are bunkered today.

“Today’s methanol bunkering demonstration is another step in helping the shipping industry better understand the practical benefits of methanol,” said Paul Hexter, President of Waterfront Shipping.

This is a significant development and further evidence of the value of methanol as a low-emission, safe and simple to handle clean fuel that offers a pathway to a lower-carbon future.

The availability of methanol as a marine fuel in almost 90 of the world’s top 100 ports offers shipowners a cost-effective way to reduce their emissions while engaging in an economic and sustainable option for energy transition
